Look Up

There are some moments that’s forever etched into your heart.

I remember my moment when i looked up to an unbroken spirit. A stranger. Of all the thousands strangers you meet, it is a few who touch your heart and fewer still who change your perception of life. And i am lucky to have met one.

Even though it was years back, it appears to have been just yesterday. It was in one of the medical camp. I remember the moment i met him. He rode his bicycle in an odd way and when i tried to make sense why, he fell down. Me and my friends  immediately rushed to his aid and that’s when i saw something dangling near his feet. Imagine my shock when i found out that it was indeed his feet!!

It hung there like fate clinging to a man whose heart it couldn’t touch.

He smiled at me as if he was reading my thoughts. After I made him drink water, he withdrew his leg carefully and kept it there as if it was an object. I looked into his eyes and realised the effort and the pain that consumed him to do that. He smiled again. It was a smile that taught me there’s courage in the soul that can conquer the pain in our lives. I couldn’t stand there for a second more. I could see he had an effect on my friends too but not as much as he had affected me. I just got up without another word and went away.

It took me a while to regain my senses. And after i brought him food. He started eating. I have never seen a man enjoy his meal as much as he did. The first morsel of rice that he ate gave him such joy that I doubted if pain could ever bother him again. After a few minutes he started talking to us all.

He told us it was an accident a few years back. He was riding the same bicycle when a young drunk man in a scooter hit him.The doctors insisted on amputating his leg but he refused.

Even when his family insisted he didn’t budge. The police had caught the man who had done that to him and he was being brought to the local Panchayat. This man who was forbidden to walk for a few months escaped his own house and travelled all the way to the Panchayat and told them to free this man. When the Elders insisted on knowing the reason he told us his words were “I do not want to ruin a young man’s life for the sake of a ruined leg”.

How could he have found the strength to forgive when he had nearly lost his leg? I asked him what happened to the young man and he told me they released him a day later and the man came and fell to his feet and asked to be forgiven. He told me his words were “I never thought you did anything. How can I forgive you for something you have never done?” The young man then promised him that he would never drink again.

He had a changed a man’s life. He had the power to seek revenge and yet he choose to forgive.

I didn’t till that moment believed such people existed. It was something that changed my perception. It was my moment of looking up to goodness, strength , optimism , hope and courage.

After talking to us for some more time he left. It was struggle for him to ride his bicycle but he never choose to give in to pain. Seeing him peddle sent shivers into my spine as I realised from how long he must have been doing that. I realised I had never asked his name or the village he was from. He would still be safe as a precious memory and his words would still echo in the ranches of my soul.

I saw him one last time vanishing into the recess of time and as I took a last look at his broken leg, I realised that no fate or destiny could ever break his spirit or his heart.

“Honey, is it on?”

“What?” she shouted from across our room.

“The box i brought home last night.” I shouted back, my thoughts scrupulously wandering across every bizarre universe you can think of. Oh! universe? Wierd.

I could almost hear a faint sound of metal striking mind.

“I think the fuse’s burnt” she said with an air of expertise.

“Was this important?” she asked almost waiting to devour my answer.

“Yes, it was a gift.” i replied almost sadly.

“From?”

“The aliens that visited our house last night. They said it was some kind of an idea box that was gifted to them by aliens that visited their house.”

“Ohh , i think we should pass it on too” she suggested.

“Brilliant idea!”

Crowd

There was so much to see, so much to feel.

It was haphazard, feeling lost amidst a crowd. When you have people everywhere but not the one who you expected anywhere.

It was a dance in motion, a synchronization that occured randomly with chaos. It was a battlefield and a monastery.

Standing there , i felt i was a part of something greater. Something far more simpler.

It felt i was finally a part of humanity.

“What happened?” she asked through the window.

“Nothing.. dear” . The hesitation was apparent in my voice.

” Okay, i will wait” she said.

I knew i couldn’t hold much longer. The chairs opposite me were scattered. I was on the floor with my hand covering my head. The chairs were empty and so was my mind.

“It’s..it’s..”. Before i could complete she was beside me holding my hand. “it’s ok” she whispered, her words soothing the ache in me.

“My mind’s empty, i am blank ” i spit it out looking her way in tears.

She smiled. And in that moment i forgot the world existed.

His Legacy

It’s said you cannot trap a heart in a place because only a heart has the freedom to roam the world freely.

And yet for Bala it was different. His heart was trapped in his room.

Every instrument there called out for him. They made him forget food, sleep even.

His friends and family wondered what good he was up to until, until the day he died.

One of his friend  put up his composition on the internet.

It changed everything. It changed Music.

It created a Legacy.

Mirror Mirror

Shreya stood in the corner of her room and stared at the mirror on the wall.

After a while, she gasped her breath and whispered ” Mirror Mirror on the wall, which is the fairest selfie of them all?”

Puffff!! Came the smoke and the mirror replied –

“Baby, you are just 9 , worry about the crayon you lost, by the way it’s under the table and it’s time you sleep.”

How i left the Kitten?

I had to leave it.

One love i didn’t know i had. Looking back i feel i have done the right choice. Or maybe a wrong one?

The moment i stepped into his house and asked the uncle there, “Can i take him home?”

He didn’t like it, he didn’t want it but all the while he agreed. “You can have him” he said with a sadness that i couldn’t sense then.

I opened the door and saw him resting on his mothers lap unaware of my next plan. I took him away in his sleep and half way back home he woke up. He was afraid. He had never left his home or his mother and here he was, being taken. He struggled, he kicked me. I never gave up. Nor did he.

It was the moment where i put him at a height i thought he couldn’t jump. I think he surprised even himself when he did that and he ran. Helter Skelter. I chased him and saw him running into a hole. He never came out. I had to break it or else i would have let the poor guy die.

After an hour i caught him. Man , he did fight, he did give me a chase.

********************************************

Just when everyone where happy and thought we could take him, i looked at the poor Kitten and thought – Will i give u a better home?

I think the question was always  “better” not “new”   because all the while i had been asking myself the question – Will i give u a new home?

New might certainly never be better.

I went back and left him with his mother.

I saw a happy mother. The uncle was happy too. Maybe i was too.

But that is how i left the kitten with a heavy heart.
